Jacks Under 18’s and 20’s Preview

It’s been a good fortnight for the Jacks 18’s and 20’s with both winning at Cockburn last week.

The Jacks under 20’s go into Saturday with three wins to start the season, the latest a hard-fought win at Cockburn last week, a game coach Jon Higgins said was a great all-round team performance. “Last week we had a tough game, and we had to fight all the way to bring home the points. Defensively we were fantastic, and a special mention to Nicholas Koefler and James Bruce who had their hands full all afternoon,” he said.

“But the most pleasing thing for me was seeing the quality in depth we have and it was great to see Dor Jok and Luke Rhodes come on a freshen the game up – All in all a great team performance.

Higgins said his boys are looking forward to taking on the Glory and he said it should be a great game.  “Saturday is another challenge with Glory, like us, yet to drop points,” he said. “We know they will be well-organised, but so will we, and I’d imagine there is a few lads this weekend that probably have a point to prove. It should be a very competitive game, and one we will be looking for nothing more than maximum points.”

The Jacks under 18’s have won back-to-back games, including a tight win at Cockburn last week, and Coach Willie McNally said his young group have improved since their opening defeat at Perth SC. “Derek and I have been really pleased the way the lads have responded after our disappointing start at Perth in the season opener,” he said.

“We won the local derby against my former club Sorrento and produced a great performance against a talented Cockburn City side last week with goals from Connor McKee and Harry Blunt. On Saturday we take on Perth Glory who are unbeaten, but with only three points separating the two sides it should be an entertaining game.”

Former Jacks assistant first team coach and player Steven McGarry returns to the campus as under 18’s Glory coach and he said he’s looking forward to catching up with everyone at the club, and is expecting a tough game. “Yes, I enjoyed three excellent seasons at the club in various roles and have made some lifelong friends in that time and I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone on Saturday,” he said.

“Our boys have had an excellent start to the season and the challenge for them is to consistently perform and it would be great for some of them to progress to the 20’s and first team like some of them have done already during the early part of the season.

“Willie and Derek have assembled a very good squad thisyear with some excellent individuals in the side and will no doubt be challenging for the title this year, so it will be excellent challenge for our young squad.”
