ECU Joondalup trio Shane Cassidy, Joe Knowles and Ollie Annis have been selected in the Gold Fields WA State Team’s for the Men’s Challenge Cup against A-League side Perth Glory at Frank Drago Reserve on Wednesday evening.

It’s a second consecutive call up for Cassidy, and the big defender said he wasn’t expecting it. “Yes, it’s a nice surprise to be selected in the state squad to face the Glory, it’s always good to test yourself against the best players in Perth and Australia and learn a few things along the way as well,” he explained. “Hopefully we give a good account of ourselves and the NPL on the night and give them a good challenge.”

Annis was part of the Glory’s NPL and Foxtel Youth League squad last season and he said he is delighted to be called into the squad after an injury hit season. “Yes, I’m very happy to be selected in the state team, very positive since coming back from injury,” he said. “It’s a great challenge for the NPL players and one I’m looking forward to, hopefully I can stay injury free and keep playing as well as I can week in week out.”

Knowles said when he was told he was really surprised, but he said he’s looking forward to it. “It was a bit of a shock for me to be honest when Dale (McCulloch) told me considering I’ve only played about six games,” he said. “But I’m happy to have made the squad and I’m looking forward to the game.”

Sorrento Head Coach Jamie Harnwell will take the Football West side, with Football West Development Officer Garry Church his assistant. Glory hold the cup after defeating the WA State side 5-2 at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium last year.
