ECU Joondalup return to the Campus on Saturday when they host Cockburn City at the ECU Football Stadium in Week 14 of the NPL WA.

The 2-1 win at Sorrento last week ended the clubs six game run without a and a goal and skipper Johnny Perkins, who made some great saves to keep the Gulls at bay, said it was a good get back in the winner’s circle.

“The points were important given our circumstances but the performance was just as pleasing,” he explained. “It’s never easy going down 1-0 after only three minutes, but the team showed real composure and desire to make sure we came away with the three points.”

New signing Jamal Reiners was again impressive while youngster Ewan Fawcett, Nick Koefler, Ollie Annis and Bayley-Brown-Montgomery put in great performances, and Perkins said the young players have stood up this season. “Jamal has slotted in seamlessly and is great to have a player of his quality on board,” he said.

“The young lads have been excellent. No one at the club is surprised with their performances because we see their quality at training week in week out. They have taken their chances and now they’re showing other teams what they’re about which is a credit to them.”

This week we host third placed Cockburn City, which will be another tough challenge, but after last weeks win, and the hard-fought point against the league leaders Perth, the Jacks are now playing with a lot of confidence and Perkins said they are looking forward to the challenge.

“Cockburn are having another strong season and we know they have some quality players and are very organised,” he said. “Having said that we know we can match anyone on our day, that belief hasn’t changed since game one at their place. We are champing at the bit to build on this momentum and not focusing too much on the opposition.”

Head Coach Dale McCulloch was happy with the performance last week at Sorrento and is looking for more of the same on Saturday. “Last week we put in a good 90-minute performance to come home from local rivals Sorrento with a 2-1 win, and I was really pleased with every member of the squad,” he explained.

“The conditions weren’t the best and after conceding a soft goal early we had our skipper to thank for keeping us in the game with a number of really good save. After that though they didn’t really cause us much problems and two goals from Bayley gave us the points.

“I’ve said for a number of weeks we lacked confidence in games, but last week we showed it in spades and the rest of the coaching and I were pleased, and we have set that standard now and need to continue on with it. That starts on Saturday against a very good Cockburn City side. We’ve had some battles against them in the past and this one will be no different.”
