Jacks host Floreat Athena this weekend

ECU Joondalup return home this weekend when we host Floreat Athena at the ECU Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Jacks are coming off a 0-2 loss at Inglewood United last week, where again the squad depth was tested after more injuries, and Head coach Dale McCulloch will be hoping for some better news on the injury front in this one.

They will be without influential defender Shane Cassidy who is suspended, but do regain the services of Tommy Amphlett after his one game ban and hopefully Andy Higgins, Joe Knowles, Josh Whitmore and Ryan McDarby is these players have recovered from injury.

“I thought we fought the game out really well, especially with the players we had out on the day,” McCulloch said. “We’ve had to use a number of our younger players this season and last week I thought Kian McGuigan and Ewen Fawcett were outstanding, while Nick Kofler, Harry Edwards and Ben Hinshelwood came off the bench and all put in strong performances.

Our senior players also stood up with Henry Durr, Shane Cassidy and Johnny Perkins leading the side by example and we will be looking for more of the same on this week. Saturday will be another challenge, but one we’re looking forward too. Floreat have started to hit their straps and sit third on the table, but we’ve had some good games against them over the last few years and Saturday will be more of the same.”

Defender Ronald Rixer has been outstanding this season and has played in recent weeks with stitches to a head wound but it’s now on the mend, and he said the loss last week at Inglewood was a huge blow. “The head injury is healing up well and with the stitches out, I’m now allowed to head a ball again which is always ideal when your feet aren’t too flash,” he joked.

“Everyone at the club is disappointed with the loss last week, but the talented youth is something that ECU has always had and it’s great to see them stepping up into men’s football and really showing their class for the first team. If these boys continue to build on their experience and keep learning from the senior players and coaches around them, it will make for a promising future for the club.”

Rixer said they are looking forward to taking on the in-form Floreat and getting positive result. “We’ve had some disappointing performances this season, but the worst have been against the weaker sides, but our team has a habit of showing up to the big games against the bigger teams so I’m looking forward to a promising game this weekend against Floreat,” he explained.

“Dale and the coaching staff have identified key aspects of the game that we’ve been struggling with in recent games and hopefully we can make amends for these issues in this weekend’s fixture. They are a good team with good players, but we are ready for the challenge.”
