ECU Joondalup kick off their 2019 NPLWA season on Saturday afternoon when they make the trip to Dorrien Gardens to take on last season’s Champions Perth SC. (3.00pm)

It’s a tough first up start for Dale McCulloch’s side but the coach said they are looking forward to it. “Yes, it’s a tough start, but we have to play each team twice, and this league is very competitive, so who ever we play we know it will be a tough game,” he said.

“We’ve trained well this week and the players are looking forward to getting the season started, and a win at the champions will give us a great start – I can’t wait.”

McCulloch said spots in the starting side have been up for grabs and the whole squad have worked extremely hard in the pre-season. “The players have worked hard and are as fit as any team I’ve coached here, so that is a great start,” he explained.

“We have some quality and believe we can be competitive against any team in the league, we weren’t happy with certain things in the night series but that’s what these games are for. One thing is for sure I’ve got the confidence in all my players and I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”

New Czech striker Jakub Sklenar and Joe Knowles have both been in good goalscoring form in the pre-season, but for Sklenar the loss in the final Night series game was disappointing. “It was a shame that we didn’t make the knockout stage of the Night series,” said.

“I wouldn’t say it was just about the game against Rockingham, there were games when we should have taken three points, especially against Perth SC and Sorrento, but it is mainly about good competitive matches, to get some game time in our legs before the season starts, and we got that.”

Sklenar is in line to make his debut for the club on Saturday, along with Richard Howles, and the striker is enjoying his time at the club and he is also coaching in the club’s academy, and he said he is also looking forward to his NPLWA debut against the Champions.

“All the people around the club have been welcoming and supportive that means everything has been easier for me, also being involved in the club junior coaching is something what I really enjoy, and working along the talented players, and helping them to be as good as they can be, it’s very enjoyable,” he said.

“I’m really looking to my first game over here in the NPLWA, but all the players are excited about this game. Both teams have a quality sides, so I believe we will get prepared and head there and hopefully bring home the points.”
