It’s not only the ECU Joondalup SC first team that are in pre-season mode our under 18’s and 20’s, are in full swing ahead of the NPLWA opener against Perth SC on March 16 and both sides have played a number of games.
The under 20’s took on Sunday Amateur Premier League side Kingsley SC last week at the Campus and ran out 3-1 winners, with Bayley Brown-Montgomery, Charlie Breen and Jack Carroll on target. Under 20’s Coach Jon Higgins was pleased with the workout. “The game on Thursday was really good, we had a few numbers and I can’t pick one player who didn’t perform, the attitudes were spot on and I thought for most of the game we controlled it,” he explained.
“I know a couple of the Kingsley lads and they have some clever players so it was pleasing to see us perform against a solid outfit. Also credit to the younger lads who’s started the game, they really work hard and were really effective. I really think there’s going to be some success across the three squads this year.”
Higgins, who will be head coach of the 20’s this season, said pre-season is going to plan. “We’re really happy with pre-season, and the player have been really good,” he said. “To be fair we have run the lads and haven’t heard too much complaining, along with their technical ability if the boys are super fit, I can’t see to many teams having a good day against us.”
Our under 18’s beat Bayswater City 5-0 recently, with Connor McKee bagging four goals, with Lewis Tucker adding the other. They also beat Ashfield 3-0 with Oscar, Luke Davies and Tucker scoring. Coach Willie McNally and Derek Johnstone have been delighted the way the boys are going, but Johnstone knows there is a long way to go. “We’re delighted the way things are going, and Willie and I have seen an improvement from the players, with and without the ball,” he said. “We know there is a long way to go but the signs are looking good, so we will be looking for the players to continue their improvement as we prepare for the new NPLWA season.”
