On Saturday 24th the ECU Joondalup Soccer Club Under 13’s played in the Armadale Cup and came home with as winners, and Coach Nik Silsby gave us a report on the great day for the youngsters.

Armadale Cup 2019
As there was no under 13’s competition, we decided to play in the Under 14’s alongside hosts Armadale, Lynwood Colts and Fremantle City. The idea was to get used to playing against more physical and bigger boys in preparation for next season.

I also wanted them to learn from the tournament and that was done in each game by 3 boys from the team preparing the team in formation, positions, substitutions (equal game time) and pre match talk for each game. With 5 games being played they all had a say in the team over the course of the day.

Our first game was against a big Armadale side and we won 1-0 with a header from Will Brennan after a great corner kick from Taylor Phoenix-Wright.

We followed this with a 3-0 win against Lynwood with goals from Jake Bethall, Lewis Moses and a screamer from Alfie Henriques. We then played Fremantle and won 5-0 with goals from Latrell and four from Will Brennan.

After the group games we had finished top without conceding a goal and played Fremantle in the Semi-Finals and we won 3-0 with goals from Charlie Grindley and a brace to Lewis Moses.

So, it was onto the final against Armadale – we controlled the whole game and they rarely threatened out goal. We had lots of possession and created several good chances but we couldn’t score after 20 minutes so went straight into three minutes extra time – still no goals, so onto penalties.

Kristian Rasano our keeper was away with the State Schoolboys so we rotated our keeper with an outfield player throughout the day. Charlie Grindley who was in goal at the end of the game stuck his hand up. It was 4-4 after 5 penalties each so went to sudden death – Jake Bethell calmly put his pen away and then Armadale’s final penalty hit the bar and we were the winners!
Throughout the day the boys showed a great attitude towards teammates, opposition and the referees. They played some great attacking football and were cheered on by a great set of parents and friends.

Thank you to Armadale for hosting us in a great day, thank you to the parents for their help and support (not only on the day but throughout the season) and thank you to all the boys for the way they represented the club and themselves and for the football they played. They are an amazing bunch of boys and it is a privilege to be able to coach them.
