ECU Joondalup return to the campus this weekend when they host Stirling Lions in Week 15 of the NPL WA.

It’s a crucial game for both sides and both won last week. A Jamal Reiners penalty earned the Jacks three valuable points against Cockburn, while Lions defender Steven McDonald did likewise for Trevor Morgan’s side against his former club Sorrento. This one is a real six pointer with both teams desperate for the win, especially with the table so close down the bottom.

Jacks Head Coach Dale McCulloch said last week’s win was important to keep their recent run of from going but the performance was good.

“Last week’s game against Cockburn City was pleasing. Yes, we won the game, but the performance was good, and me and the other coaches were happy with our resilience and team effort,” he said.

“We set a standard last week, and we need to maintain it for the rest of the season. It was also great to see Jamal get off the mark, and his late penalty won it for us.”

McCulloch said Saturday’s opponents will be desperate for the points, but he is looking to maintain their standard and will have to be at their best against the Lions.

“Stirling will be tough, they have improved under the guidance of Trevor Morgan in recent weeks, and he’s made a few good signings and they have started to get some good results, so we need to be at our best on Saturday to get the result,” he explained.

“We’re now unbeaten in our last three games and the players have turned things around, and spots in the starting line-up are up for grabs and training has been upbeat.

“But if we don’t pick up three points on Saturday the last three weeks have been a waste of time, so we hope to give our loyal sponsors and supporters another good performance and three points.”

If you can’t make the game it will streamed live on the Football West website.

In other games this weekend Willie McNally’s under 18’s takes on a Lions side just one place above them on the table. They had a good win at Macedonia Park in round six and after back-to-back wins against Sorrento and Cockburn, they will be looking to make it three straight wins on Saturday.

Jon Higgins’ under 20’s has also won their last two games and currently sit second on the table, four points behind leaders Perth Glory. Saturday’s opponents are sitting bottom of the table, but put a good performance in their first meeting, before the Jacks prevailed 1-0.

Higgins said they have really done well after the disappointing loss at home to Perth SC and he said his players have responded well. “We’re looking forward to the game at Stirling, we all had a chat before the Sorrento game after a few poor results we had previously, just on how we approach the games and the standards we set in the first 15 minutes,” he explained.

“The lads had a big input and I think to be fair both the Sorrento and Cockburn games it really did show with two great performances. The lads have stepped up again and we are looking to defend that league title which was our goal from the outset.

“In saying that Stirling made it very difficult for us at their place earlier in the season, we will make sure we are up for the contest and looking to take the three points.”
