ECU Joondalup are one game away from their first State League Cup Grand Final since 2002 and a spot in the National draw of the FFA Cup when they take on Armadale in the FFA Cup Preliminary Round Seven WA at Alfred Skeet Reserve on Monday afternoon (5pm).

The Jacks have beaten Inglewood United, UWA-Nedlands and Forrestfield United to reach this stage and midfielder Josh Whitmore said they have performed well in the competition this season. “We’ve had some of our best performances in the three cup games this season, and the Forrestfield game came at a great time and gave us the opportunity to bounce back after a poor result against them just two weeks earlier,” he said. “The lads will be looking to keep that form going to make sure we get into the final.”

Striker Gordon Smith said they deserved to be in the Semi-Final and they have dominated all the three sides they have played. “We have had a good cup run against some tough opponents, and every game has been pretty comfortable if I’m being honest and we’ve deserved to be in a semi-final,” he said. 2. At the beginning of the season as a squad we knew that we were capable of a good cup run. The last two seasons we have went out to a Dianella, which was really disappointing.”

Whitmore is well aware the importance of a good cup run for the club and he said the players are determined to get the job done. “This incentive to win this competition is massive. Every team in the league would want to be playing on Monday with the chance to make the final and go into the national draw,” he said. “It’s great as a player to be playing in these games and I know all the lads will be focused on getting the win.”

Smith said Armadale are a tough team and will be up for the game, but he said so will the Jacks. “Armadale will be a really tough game, it’s never easy down there,” he explained. “We are under no illusions how hard we need to work to get into the final and we will give everything we have.” Whitmore, who joined us from Joondalup United this season, echoed Smith’s words. “They (Armadale) are having a good season and like us, will go into the game with the confidence and aim to win,” he said. “We have the quality in our squad to win this game and put ourselves into the final and I’m confident of a solid performance and positive result.”

All our teams are in action on Monday, Derek Johnstone’s 18’s take on Bayswater City in the State League 18’s Cup Semi-Final, while Mark Scanlan’s 20’s meet Perth Glory in the State League Reserves Cup Semi-Final.
