ECU Joondalup head to the E&D Litis Stadium on Sunday evening to take on Night Series winners Floreat Athena in week two of the NPLWA. (7pm)

Both sides are coming off 1-1 draws last week, the Jacks against local rivals Sorrento, while Floreat were held by newly-promoted side Forrestfield United. Jacks striker Gordon Smith said last week’s draw felt like a loss, but they remain upbeat ahead of the trip to Floreat.

“Yes it was disappointing not to win the game especially after dominating the first half, but the foul on Daryl was a clear penalty but it’s gone now and hopefully these types of decisions will even themselves out over the course of the season,” he said.

“We have a few players unavailable, so the senior boys including myself will have to lead the boys, it’s also good to see Tommy Amphlett getting back to full fitness.”

Smith said it will be a big challenge against Floreat but said they are ready for the challenge. “Floreat will be another tough game, they have some great individual players who can win a game on their own so we need to nullify them,” he explained.

“We are confident if we can do that and also play our own fast, free flowing attacking game we can get the three points we are after.”

New keeper Johnny Perkins echoed Smith’s comments and said how the penalty wasn’t awarded amazed everyone.

“I probably shouldn’t say too much about the penalty decision as I don’t want to get in trouble, but there was only one person at the game regardless of which team they played for/supported who thought that wasn’t a penalty and that was the Ref,” he said.

“I was really surprised it didn’t make the ‘Highlight’ video either…. Regardless that’s in the past. We are focused on Floreat this Sunday.”

The keeper said Sunday is a huge test, but it’s one they are looking forward too. “Floreat have good technical players that can hurt any team. They play on a big pitch and use the space well, we know we will be in for a good test,” Perkins said.

“However we have been focusing on our players and the way we want to play this week in training. Everyone is eager to get back out there as quick as possible after the draw last week.”
