Jacks defender to take on the Glory

Jacks defender Shane Cassidy has been selected in the WA State side to take on Perth Glory in the Challenge Cup at Dalmatinac Park on Thursday evening. (7.00pm)

The Irish defender was part of the squad for the first game against the A-League side last month but had to withdraw due to injury. Jacks skipper Daryl Nicol was also selected in the squad, but due to work commitments he has had to withdraw.

“It was good to get the call up again after missing the last game through injury, I didn’t expect to get called up the first time let alone for the second game so it’s nice to get a shot to test myself against Perth Glory,” Cassidy said.

“I’m looking forward to representing W.A for the first time on Thursday and hopefully give a good account of myself against top opposition, we worked on a few things in training on shape because of the short notice we had to prepare for the game so hopefully it works out on the night and we can give it a good shot and take it up to the Glory. It would be nice to get a good turn out and maybe cause an upset on the night.”

Also, in the squad is Western Knights goalkeeper Sam Stone, who is the sole non-National Premier Leagues WA player in coach Jamie Harnwell’s 19-man party. The other keeper in the squad is Cockburn City’s Luke Radonich, who played for the State Team against Glory at Inglewood United last month.

Floreat Athena’s Chris Saldaris and Hasani Sinclair of Forrestfield United – the two players who scored for the State Team in the 5-2 loss to Glory – are also recalled, and Armadale striker Chris Jackson is also included.

The Gold Fields State Team will have no Perth SC representatives as the National Premier Leagues WA champions are representing Football West in the NPL Series in Sydney this weekend.

“We’re looking forward to giving Glory another good game,” Harnwell said. “The weather was wet and wild last month so hopefully this week will be much better, which both teams will appreciate.

“Of course, we would have liked to have included a few players from Perth SC but that gives a few other players a chance to impress, which I’m sure they’ll be desperate to take.”

Thursday’s match takes place at Cockburn City’s Dalmatinac Park with kick-off at 7pm.

Admission is by gold coin donation, with proceeds going to mental health charity beyondblue.
