Under 18’s and 20’s beat Balcatta

It was a good weekend all round for the Jacks at Grindleford Reserve with all three teams beating Balcatta. There was a bizarre under 20’s game with a ten man Jacks side winning 4-3, and Coach Mark Scanlan said he’d never seen anything like it.

“Football. Bloody hell – It was probably the most mental game I’ve ever been involved in. We were comfortable at 3-0 after goals from Ethan Kerridge, Keylun Pollard and Chris Ciobanu, when we had to make an enforced change,” he explained. “Immediately after Fraser Garnaut went off the boys forgot that they were supposed to be playing football and Balcatta scored two goals in as many minutes. Then Todd Hoyle gets himself sent off and I’ve got no substitutes left, so Ciobanu goes in goal.

“Fair play to the kid for volunteering – unsurprisingly they score a third when he forgets that he’s now the goalkeeper and comes out of his box when he doesn’t need to. Then amazingly, we get the ball forward again and Kieron Craig scores to put us ahead 4-3. They had a few opportunities late on but Ciobanu turned into David De Gea, making a number of saves and punching clear a couple of corners.

It must have been one hell of a game for the neutral but I think I aged about 10 years in that second half. It’s been an eventful 2 weeks for the U20s, with spider bites, Kerridge’s 26th birthday and then Balcatta away going down as a game we’ll never forget.”

Dean Pickering’s under 18’s have continued their improvement with an excellent 4-1 win against Balcatta. A brace from Ben Hinshelwood, and others to Callum Speed and Tom Hough gave them a comprehensive win.
