Pickering say’s ‘We’re ready for the Derby’

The 2017 PS4 National Premier League WA kicks off for the Jacks on Sunday evening, and the opening game is a massive one, taking on newly-promoted Joondalup United in the first ever NPL ‘Joondalup Derby’ at Perth Doyle Reserve (7.00pm)

It’s a busy time for midfielder Shane Pickering, both on and off the park. His company 2 Half’s Football Development is flying and on the pitch the new NPL season has arrived early due to the expansion to 14 teams.

The defender/midfielder said the squad is looking good ahead of the opener, and the new signings have added depth. “It’s a similar outfit to last season with a few big losses to the side in Ryan (Lowry) and Lewis (Italiano), but the coaching staff have recruited well to fill the void,” he explained.

“We’ve signed some very good players who compliment out team and style of play very well. It’s a big squad with a lot of competition for places, but that’s what the best teams consist of. We need to keep pushing one another every week for those 11 starting spots.”

The early loss in the Night Series wasn’t ideal but Pickering said their preparation is on track. “To get knocked out of the Night Series was frustrating, but we’ve had a periodised plan from our High Performance Coach, and the Coaching staff will have us rolling from day 1 of the season,” he said.

“Without a doubt we will be fit, sharp and a tough side to beat. Every week we are looking fitter and stronger, and we are all ready for the opening game against Joondalup United.”

Pickering said Sunday’s opening game will be tough, like all Derby games are but he said they are all looking forward to getting it on. “Joondalup will be no easy turnover and we know that,” he said. “We will be there to play our game and put all the hard work we’ve done in the summer into action. We’re all looking forward to getting the ball rolling….”
