Mistakes costly as Jacks go down to Bayswater

ECU Joondalup’s PS4 National Premier League WA top four hopes took a fatal blow on Saturday, when costly mistakes cost them in a 2-0 defeat against Bayswater City at the ECU Football Stadium.

Gustavo Giron-Marulanda opened the scoring from the penalty spot just after the break, but the home side should have levelled moments later, but Gordon Smith saw his penalty saved by Devon Spence. The points were wrapped up in stoppage time, with Marulanda rolling the ball into an empty net after an error from debutant keeper Jordan Young.

Dale McCulloch made two changes to the starting line-up, giving a starting debut to keeper Jordan Young, who had a fine game, while he brought in Shane Pickering to the back four with Graham Doran dropping to the bench, also on the bench was under 18′s midfielder Tom Hough.

It’s been a sad week in the referees department at Football West with Noel Short, a former official and assessor passing away, and all officials this weekend wore black armband as a mark of respect.

The first half was one to forget, with clear cut chances few and far between, as both sides cancelling each other out.  The best chance went to the Jacks, Jon Higgins’ in-swinging corner was pushed over the top by Spence, while Andrija Jukic’s long-range shot whistled past the post for the visitors.

But Bayswater made the perfect start to the second half, taking the lead five minutes in, Marulanda sending Young the wrong way from the penalty spot after Jason Mirco was brought down by Jack Jones.

The Jacks had the perfect opportunity to level two minutes later when referee Michal Jasinski pointed to the spot after Trent Kay was adjudged to have handled in the box, but Gordon Smith saw his spot well saved low to left by Spence.

The Bayswater custodian was inspired and produced another great save to deny Daryl Nicol moments later. Both sides had chances as the game opened up, Mirco’s shot on the run was pushed around the post by Young, before Spence tipped over Nicol’s free kick at full stretch.

The Jacks were pushing men forward looking for the equaliser and it almost came late, Nicol’s shot beat Spence, but Sam Mitchinson cleared the ball off the line.

But in stoppage time Bayswater wrapped up the points. An attempted clearance from Young fell to Marulanda, who raced past the stranded keeper to fire home into an empty net.

In other results the under 18’s were beaten 4-0, while a ten man under 20’s conceded a late goal to lose 1-0.
