Johns on that goal and the win at Cockburn

It was a starting debut not to forget for Jacks defender Ben Johns.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Jacks from Perth Glory this season, after captaining their 20’s last season, popped up with one of the best individual goals you will see this season, but he was just happy to help the club to a 4-0 win at Cockburn. “It was a good team performance and it was good to get the three points and see our hard work in training start to pay off,” he said.

“We’ve definitely been unlucky in the last few weeks with things not going our way, so it was good to go out and put in such a convincing performance. Personally happy to score as well, I don’t get too many so it’s always special when I do.”

Johns wasn’t on his own last week, with injuries giving starting debuts to Sam Pollard and Logan McIsaac, and the big defender said that was why he headed back to the campus. “It’s one of the main reasons I joined the club, with so much youth in their teams,” he said. “Dale is always willing to give the young players a go and it’s up to us now to maintain the standard and show the coaches we deserve to be there.”

This week Subiaco visit the Campus, and the defender hopes he’s done enough for another start, and he is expecting another tough game. “There’s no easy games in this league, so we will have to be up for the challenge against Subi and I’m sure we will,” he said.

“There has been an emphasis this week at training on maintaining the intensity and building some momentum, hopefully getting another win on the board on Saturday. Subi have been in some good form so it will definitely be a big challenge for us come Saturday.”

Back to that goal, which has gone viral on the internet, and Johns said good job he scored it, or he would have been in trouble. “I don’t have too many goals to choose from in terms of the best I’ve scored so it would definitely be up there,” he said.

“It was just as well I scored in the end because I think Goggsy made a good run, and would have something to say for not letting him get his hat-trick had I missed.”
