Also in action on Saturday were the ECU Joondalup under 18’s and 20’s and both came away with 3-1 wins against Balcatta.

We fell behind early with a lack of concentration falling asleep at the back,” he said.

“This quickly changed and we came out firing and scored a quick two goals through Callum Speed and Kieron Craig. These two are having a great pre-season and they are firing at the right time heading into the season opener next week.

“Second half we come out on top again and did not let it slip and kept the intensity high. We maintained the lead and then scored another through Miki Imre off a corner.

“Overall a really pleasing performance and another great result, plenty of positives again coming from the match. The boys have worked so hard this pre-season and to see them getting some positive results during the games is very pleasing to see – Bring on the season opener next weekend.”

Under 20’s Coach Mark Scanlan said he was really pleased with the performance, but still believes they could convert more of the chances they are creating. “It was a physical game for both sides in difficult conditions so I was fairly happy with the result at full time,” he said.

“Declan Hughes scored an unbelievable free kick from about 35-yards out. He’s got that ability so it was good for him to get on the score sheet. Shakeel Alexander was impressive against his old club and pinched a goal and Keylun Pollard continued his impressive form this pre-season by cutting in from the left and smashing one in from outside the box.

“We could and should have scored more, so we need to learn to be more clinical in front of goal. With the derby coming up next weekend I’ve got some selection headaches because of the quality in the squad. Some boys will be disappointed to be on the bench against Joondalup United but they all have an important role to play this coming season.”
