ECU Joondalup have suffered a huge blow with Gordon Smith, Daryl Nicol and assistant Coach David Tough all joining Philippines side Ilocos United FC, for their upcoming Premier League season.

Former Jacks Technical Director of Football Andy Petterson recently joined the club and has enticed the trio to head to club to bolster their title push.

Tough said it was a hard decision but said he’s looking forward to the challenge. “It’s a great opportunity for me and my family, and when they contacted me it was an easy decision,” he said.

“The club are very ambitious and are looking to make an immediate impact and I really looking forward to it. ECU has been very supportive to me and my family and I wish them all the best for the rest of the season.”

Smith, who joined the club from Scotland last season and was the league’s top goalscorer, said the chance to play in a new league was something that drew him to Ilocos. “It was a massive decision to move, but to play in another country and test yourself in a different climate, is something I relish,” he said. “They have a great set up and I can’t wait to get started over there.”

Nicol said he looking forward to playing in the Philippines and taking in the culture of a new country. “It’s an exciting challenge for me and Gordon on the pitch and Toughy off the pitch,” he said.  “It’s a new chapter in my football career and I can’t wait for the season starts.

When asked why they are heading to the Philippines all had the same answer – $6 a pint I hear – April Fools!!!!!!!
