Jacks old boy give Floreat the points

Former ECU Joondalup midfielder Jon Stynes continuing his good form against his old club, bagging the only goal in Floreat Athena’s 1-0 win in Week 18 of the PS4 NPLWA at the ECU Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Stynes scored the only goal of the game eight minutes before half time, but Floreat then had Phil Arnold sent off five minutes later, but the ten men stood firm to hold off the Jacks’ second pressure and come home with the three points. (Photo – Daryl Nicol takes on Ludovic Boi)

McCulloch made three changes to the side that were beaten at Inglewood last week, with Jon Higgins coming into the middle of the park for Sam Pollard, while Ben Johns came in for Jack Iredale, while Fraser Garnaut came in for James Owen

It was bright opening with chances at both ends. Garnaut sent Daryl Nicol in on goal, but the flag was up for offside, before Arnold’s snap shot flashed over the top and Ludovic Boi stung the palms of keeper Fraser Greenwood.

Then on 20 minutes the Jacks then won a free kick 20-yards out, and Higgins’ set-piece flashed inches wide of the post.

But on 37 minutes the visitors hit the front. A cross from the right was dropped by Greenwood, under pressure from a Floreat striker, the ball falling to Stynes, who finished from close-range

ECU went close again six minutes from half time, Nicol’s free kick on the edge of the penalty area, flashed inches wide of the target.

The gloss was taken off the good first half for Floreat, when Arnold was shown a straight red card by referee David Bruce after a rash challenge on Kevin Moon.

The Jacks made a change at the break with striker James Owen coming on to replace Shane Pickering, and he almost had an immediate impact.

Nicol raced down the right in the first minute, and whipped in a deep cross to the back post, and Owen’s header crashed off post, the rebound falling to Jon Higgins, and with the goal at his mercy blazed over the top.

Owen went close again mid-way through the half, Nicol’s cross picking the striker again at the back post, but his effort was palmed away by Jason Saldaris.

The Jacks continued to press forward, but they couldn’t find the equaliser and Floreat almost doubled their lead late, Boi cutting into the penalty area, but his shot was well saved by Greenwood.

Then in the second minute of stoppage time the Jacks had one final chance. Steven McGarry’s free kick was headed back across goal by Graham Doran, but Nicol’s header whistled wide of the target.

There was a sour moment after the game when a Floreat supporters confronted Jacks midfielder Steven McGarry, which could have been a nasty incident but the players and Coach Dale McCulloch stepped in to intervene

In other games on the day the under 18’s were beaten 0-3 go Floreat, while the under 20’s won 4-1 with goals from Logan McIsaac, Keylun Pollard, Corey Hyde and a goal on his debut for Kyle Murray
