Jacks let it slip late at Floreat

A goal three minutes from time by former Jacks midfielder Jon Stynes has given Floreat Athena a 1-0 win in the Round Five PS4NPLWA clash at the E&D Litis Stadium on Saturday evening.

Tommy Amphlett had the best chance in the first half but was denied by Jason Saldaris, before skipper Jon Higgins’ corner flicked off the crossbar, and Gordon Smith headed inches wide after the break, but they switched off late and were made to pay.

The Jacks made one change to the side that beat Inglewood United last week, with Tommy Amphlett returning from suspension to replace Danny Milne, who dropped to the bench.

It was a good start by the Jacks and they went close after only three minutes. Amphlett made space down the right, eased past his marker and picked out Daryl Nicol at the back post, but last week’s two goal hero’s volley was well saved by Jason Saldaris. Nicol turned provider on 27 minutes, bursting down the left and crossing to Nathan Diaz, who fired home, but the flag was up for offside.

Moments later Diaz sent Gordon Smith clear, and he was bundled down just outside the area. The defender was the last man but referee David Bruce thought there was cover and didn’t book the Floreat player. The home side were compact and were hitting well on the counter attack, and Jackson Morgan’s long-range shot was straight at Fraser Greenwood.

The best chance of the half fell to the Jacks on 38 minutes. A superb ball from Shane Pickering sent Amphlett racing down the left, his shot on the run was well saved by Jason Saldaris at his near post. Both sides had late chances as the game opened up. First Floreat skipper Stynes played in the overlapping Shaun Timmins whose shot from the angle was well claimed by Greenwood.

Then in the final minute Amphlett wriggled past two Floreat defenders on the right, and picked out Nicol at the back post. The Scottish winger eased past his marker but blazed over the top.

Floreat started the second half brightly and Greenwood had to be alert to save Stynes’ header early, before Kris Gate shot landed on top of the net. Morgan was finding a lot of room in the middle of the park, and his shot from the edge of the penalty area was saved by Greenwood. Then on 75 minutes Jon Higgin’s in-swinging corner crashed off the crossbar and Ross Millard’s follow up shot was blocked.

Then moments later Nicol’s free kick found Gordon Smith, who nipped in front of his marker, but his header flashed inches past the post. It looked like it would end scoreless but on 87 minutes Floreat scored the winner. A long ball into the penalty area found second half substitute Bobby Wilson, who held the ball up and laid it off to Stynes, who finished low past Greenwood to win it.
