Jacks dominate but lose to Sorrento

After dominating for 74 minutes of the Northern Derby, ECU Joondalup came away empty handed after Sorrento won 3-2 in a smash and grab raid at the ECU Football Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Daryl Nicol gave the home side the lead early and Sorrento keeper James Morgan produced two good saves to keep his side in the game. Billy Quinncroft levelled for Sorrento on the quarter hour, but still the Jacks dominated with Tommy Amphlett outstanding.

After the break they hit the woodwork twice as they pressed for the lead, but against the run of play Sorrento substitute Alex Morgan scored a stunning long-range shot, and moments later Jack Salter made it three. Sam Pollard scored his first goal for the senior side later on put it was too little too late.

McCulloch made one change from the side that lost to Floreat Athena last week with Nathan Diaz dropping to the bench, Shane Pickering going into the back four, and Kevin Moon returned to the middle of the park.

It was a great start from the Jacks and in the third minute Amphlett raced past his marker and cross to Gordon Smith, whose shot was well saved by James Morgan. But two minutes later the Jacks hit the front.

Sorrento gave the ball away and Nicol pounced. He played in Smith, whose shot was well saved by James Morgan, his follow up shot hit the bar, but Nicol was on hand to bundle the ball over the line. Moments later Smith was sent in on one-on-one with the Sorrento keeper, who produced a great save to deny the Scottish striker.

Smith went close again on ten minutes, again Amphlett roasted his marker and delivered a low cross, but again Smith was denied by the Sorrento custodian.

But on 12 minutes Sorrento levelled. Scott Witschge raced down the left and whipped in a dangerous cross that Quinncroft headed home, despite Fraser Greenwood getting a hand to it. Smith tried his luck from long-range, but it was straight at the keeper, before Nicol’s shot on the run whistled wide.

Greenwood reacted well to deny Quinncroft late in the half, before Scott Bulloch volleyed over the top. Then in the shadows of half time Smith’s pace took him clear, and his shot on the run was pushed around the post by James Morgan.

The Jacks started well after the break, Nicol’s long-range shot was saved by James Morgan, while Smith headed inches past the post. Jon Higgins’ in-swinging corner crashed off the crossbar, before Jack Jones headed over the top.

Higgins then set up Smith, whose shot was well saved by the keeper, and Amphlett blazed the rebound over the top. The Jacks lost Amplhellt on 66 minutes, the winger limping off with an ankle injury.

It was one way traffic and Higgin’s free kick looked destined for the top corner, but again the woodwork denied his 20-yard effort. But against the run of play it was Sorrento who took the lead on 74 minutes, a stunning long-range shot from Alex Morgan flew past Greenwood.

They increased their lead two minutes later, Alex Morgan the supply this time sending Salter clear and he finished well.

It was a bitter blow for the Jacks, who had dominated the game, but that’s football. They continued to push forward and were rewarded with a consolation goal in stoppage time. Nicol’s corner was turned home by Pollard, but it was too little too late.
