Iredale gives Jacks a share of the spoils

ECU Joondalup new signing Jack Iredale was on target on his NPL debut for the club, the former Perth Glory Youth defender heading home the equaliser to give the Jacks a 2-2 draw against Joondalup United in the local derby at the ECU Football Stadium.

Joondalup United’s skipper Arran Maplestone had given the visitors the lead early, before ECU skipper Gordon Smith levelled, but Maplestone gave his side the lead at the break. But Iredale levelled, and despite both sides having chances to win it but both had to settle for a point.

Jacks Coach Dale McCulloch made four changes to the side that lost to Perth SC the last time out with news signings Iredale and Graham Doran coming in for their debuts, while Shane Pickering and Steven McGarry came into midfield. Tommy Amphlett was missing with injury, while Logan McIsaac, Ben Johns and James Owen made way.

Only two points separated the sides at kick-off, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring on nine minutes. Rowdy Yates’ free kick wasn’t dealt with by the ECU defence and Maplestone made them pay stabbing the ball home from close-range. Joondalup keeper James Bosdet then came to his sides rescue with a stunning reaction save to deny Ross Millard’s deflected shot. The keeper was heading the opposite direction but managed to push the ball away to safety.

But there was little he could do on the half hour when the home side levelled. Iredale raced from defence and fed Daryl Nicol, who sent Smith clear with a perfectly weighted pass and the Scottish striker finished clinically past Bosdet.  Joondalup hit back and regained the lead six minutes before half time. Again it was Yates’ free kick that caused the problems, picking out Maplestone at the back post, who rose highest to head superbly back across goal and just out of the reach of ECU custodian Fraser Greenwood.

The home side should have levelled in the shadows of half time, Steven McGarry’s deep free kick picked out Shane Pickering, but with the goal at his mercy the midfielder header missed the target. Joondalup were almost caught napping early in the second half. A quick free kick from McGarry played in Smith, whose shot flashed inches wide. It was a good start to the second half from the home side and on 52 minutes they levelled. Nicol’s corner found Iredale, who celebrated his debut for the club heading home powerfully from eight meters.

Moments later the woodwork came to Joondalup’s rescue, a mistake at the back let in Smith whose shot was half stopped by Bosdet but the ball rolled agonisingly goalwards but hit the post and was cleared. It was a typical derby, end to end football, and Joondalup were next to go close. A great through ball from Matthew Sparrow sent Jay Marston in on goal, but a superb last ditch tackle from Iredale, prevented the former ECU midfielder a shot at goal. ECU hit the woodwork again on 56 minutes, McGarry’s free kick was met by Smith his header beat Bosdet, but the ball crashed off the crossbar and away to safety.

Maplestone went close to his third on the hour, a superb long-range free kick was heading for the top corner, but a stunning one handed save from Greenwood denied him his hat-trick. Both sides pressed late, McGarry curling a free kick into the side netting for the home side, before Marston’s long-range shot in jury time flashed wide of the target.

In other games the under 18’s were beat 3-1 by Joondalup United, with Mubashir Shiik-Adba scoring. The under 20’s came from a goal down to beat Joondalup United 3-1. Fraser Garnett levelled before half time before Ben Hinshelwood put them in front,  and Ethan Kerridge added the third from the spot to seal the victory.
