Herd steps up to under 18’s

ECU Joondalup academy Coach Willie Herd will step up and aid under 18’s coach Dean Pickering for the rest of the season. Herd, who has a C class coaching license, has done a magnificent job with the clubs academy.

Herd has had a helping hand bringing quality to the football club, including Gordon Smith, Kevin Moon and Daryl Nicol, and he believes his experience will help Dean and get the 18’s back on track.

“The under 18’s coaching gig is a tough one, and Dean and his side has found it tough this season, so after an approach from the committee it was decided that I assist him for the rest of the season,” he explained.

“We have a reputation of strong junior sides, but with injuries to the first team has meant players have had to move up from the 18’s to the 20’s, and it has left them short, and we’ve had to utilize the under 16’s, which has also left them short.

“It’s a learning curve for everyone involved this season, and it’s Dean’s first coaching role, so me joining him to help is something the club have asked, and I’m delighted to help out.”

The Jacks 18’s began the season well with a big win at Joondalup United, but have only won three more games, and the situation was brought to a head after they were well beaten at Armadale last week.

Herd said the group is lacking confidence and losing games doesn’t help that, and after sitting down in a meeting last week, the decision was made for the experienced coach to help out. “I sat down with the club last week and they asked me if I would step up and help Dean for the rest of the season, and I had no hesitation to do it,” he said.

“We have some talent in the under 18’s, but the swooping and changing of the team, which is nothing to do with the coach, has hurt the side, and we will be looking to integrate the 18’s and 16’s a little closer and get the season back on track.

“Dean and I are looking forward to the challenge, and that starts with a tough game at Macedonia Park against Stirling Lions on Saturday.”
