Vranesevic impressing senior coaches at ECU

ECU Joondalup have just completed the pre-season competition and senior coach Dale McCulloch gave a number of the talented juniors at the club a chance to impress him and one who stood out was defender Stefan Vranesevic. The 16-year-old made his senior debut for the club in the 3-1 loss to Stirling Lions but the teenager showed he is good enough to play at senior level, with a man of the match performance.

Vranesevic was surprised with the call up to the first team but enjoyed the game. “Yes it was real surprise with the all the other defenders playing well, but he had a few players with slight injuries so I came in,” he explained. “It was good, a little nervous at the start but the lads made me feel welcome and the performance of the team was quite good that is all I was thinking off.”

The youngster has been at the club since he was 10, and was a star in the under 18’s side last season. The talented defenders qualities were recognized at early age and he trained with the WA State side, but he said the coaches at the ECU Academy have helped his game, and he hopes to re-pay the faith they have shown in him. “I’ve called ECU home since I was 10-years-old, and the club have helped me progress really quickly resulting in my first Saturday game last year and a debut this year for the first team, which has been great,” he said. “The first half of the season didn’t go to well in the 18’s, but we picked up our performances in the second half and were consistent at training and that progressed onto the pitch.”

Assistant first team Coach David Tough said Vranesevic has been a breath of fresh air this season. “Young Stefan has been working hard in pre-season and the coaches liked what they saw when he trained with the main group, and we gave him an opportunity and he was excellent against the Lions,” he said.  “He’s got a great attitude and wants to learn and we believe he has the attributes to play in the senior side and if given the opportunity again we know we can rely on him.”
