ECU Joondalup upped their preparation to the QBE Night Series on Saturday, with a 5-0 win against All Flags Division One side Ashfield at the Ashfield Sports Club.

Ryan Lowry opened the scoring early and Gordon Smith (right) bagged his first goal for the club on the half hour, before second half goals to Bayley Montgomery-Brown and a double from Jake Benson-Cooper made it five.

Dale McCulloch’s starting line up included 2016 new signings Gordon Smith, Shane Pickering, Steven McGarry, Josh Booysen, Jack Oldham and Jay Marsden, while keeper David Keenan, who is on trial at the club, was between the sticks.

Ashfield, who were missing a few of their starting players, are one of the favorites for the title this season, and new coach Tony Maguire’s side opened brightly, but it was ECU who hit the front on 12 minutes. Lowry powering home from six-yards, after McGarry’s free kick wasn’t clear.

It was 2-0 on the half hour. Pickering won possession in his own half and raced forward and slipped a through ball to Smith, and the Scottish import showed his prowess finished with aplomb from the edge of the penalty area.

McCulloch made five changes at the break but they continued to dominate and scored a third six minutes in. Booysen raced down the right, and pulled the ball back to Smith who played in Montgomery-Brown who finished low past Eddie Stojanovic.

Benson-Cooper made it 4-0 on 54 minutes, after good work from Booysen, before he scored his second seven minutes from time, holding off his marker and finish low past Stojanovic.

A good workout for the side as they prepare for the opening Night Series game against  Balcatta on Sunday 31st January at Percy Doyle Reserve (7pm)
