ECU Joondalup skipper Ryan ‘Paddy’ Lowry said he is ready to lead the club to success in 2016. The Jacks take on local rivals Sorrento at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday and the defender aid he is honoured to skipper the club in 2016.

“First game of the season is always special, especially for the young lads, and with it being a local derby we will be looking to come home with three points,” he said. “It’s great to be named captain again and we’re all looking forward to a successful season.”

Lowry said the squad has trained well this week and hope to start the season off with a win and it would be nice to start it with a win against their neighbours. “We’ve taken time to gel as a team in the Night Series. We started really well against Balcatta but dropped off a little, but we have some good quality to the squad and we’ll be doing our best improve on last season,” he said. “The players we’ve brought in have been excellent on and off the park and they will be good for us this season.”

Assistant coach David Tough said the skipper is vital as they look to tighten up at the back. “We leaked a few goals last season and in the night series, and it’s a problem we need to sort out sooner rather than later,” he said. “Paddy is a great lad and a talented defender and he is the leader of this football club and we will be looking for a big season from him. We have a new look back line with Joseph Jones and Steven Walmsley slotting in, and we also have other option, so we hope we can tighten up back there.”

The defender has Scottish striker Gordon Smith living with him, and he said he isn’t happy about missing out on the season opener. “He’s not stopped talking about, he’s really disappointed and because he lives with me his been getting in my ear,” Lowry joked. “It’s strange to get suspended after getting the cautions were in a different competition, but they are the rules and we move on, and we have players to step up on Saturday.”
