ECU Joondalup turned the form book on its head with a stunning 2-0 win against PS4NPLWA leaders Inglewood United at the ECU Football Stadium in week 11.

Gordon Smith gave the home side the lead on the stroke of half time and Ollie Annis added the second, as ECU ended a two game losing streak, while the loss knocked Inglewood from the summit.

“The team’s performance today was very positive and we worked hard all over the pitch, and totally deserved the three points,” Annis said.

“Beating top of the league is always enjoyable and hopefully we can continue with these positive performances in the second half of the season. On a personal note it was great to get my chance back in the starting side again, and to get a goal capped off a good day for me and the team.”

ECU assistant Coach David Tough said the return of Steven McGarry and Gordon Smith were good inclusions. “We’ve got a very young squad and they [Smith and McGarry] bring so much to our team, especially experience,” he said.

“We knew we were in with a good chance today with our senior players back into the fold and they [Inglewood] were missing a few players, so we are really happy.

“The depth of our squad will increase even more as we’ve got about four or five new signings coming in, so hopefully we can have a strong second half to the season.”

Inglewood were on the front foot early, but the ECU defence stood firm. Clear cut chances were few and far between, but in the shadows of half time the home side hit the front. Tommy Amphlett and Annis combined to send Smith clear and the Scottish striker finished well past Alex Dunn. The Inglewood custodian kept his side in the game after the break, when Amphlett’s cross field pass found Smith, his shot was tipped over the top by the alert Dunn.

Then from the resulting corner Andy Higgins’ in-swinging cross was tipped over the top by Dunn as ECU began to get on top. Inglewood were then convinced they had a penalty on 75 minutes, when Steven McGarry brought down John Migas, but referee Stuart Muldoon ruled the challenge was outside the area, and awarded a free kick, which Mark Pritchard fired wide.

But to rub salt into the wounds the home side scored the sealer two minutes later. Smith found Amphlett, who whipped in a cross and Annis headed home. Calum O’Connell went close to a consolation goal late for Inglewood, but his shot crashed off the crossbar.
