ECU Joondalup have signed Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Lewis Italiano for the rest of the PS4 NPLWA season.

WA born Italiano was part of the Perth Glory side in 2012, before signing for the Phoenix in 2013. ECU Coach Dale McCulloch said Italiano is a great signing. “It’s great to get Lewis on board, he is a fantastic keeper and will strengthen our squad,” he said. “I’ve watch Lewis’ rise in his football career and I’ve been impressed with his attitude, and I’ve no doubt he will have a long career in the game in the A-League or overseas.”

ECU goal keeping Coach Andy Petterson will work with Italiano and the former Charlton Athletic custodian said he is a talent. “Lewis will be a fantastic asset to the club,” Petterson said.

“Both David Keenan (before the injury) and Scott Wallis have done really well in recent weeks but Lewis will add that presence and stability at the back, that we have been looking for.”

Petterson believes Italiano has come on leaps and bounds since securing an A-League contract, and he believes he will only get better. “He is tall and imposing lad, who has benefited immensely from his time as a professional goalkeeper with both Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix,” he said. “

“I’m looking forward to working with him at training and in games to further enhance his game.”

Italiano’s international clearance has been received and he will make his ECU debut on Saturday at Floreat Athena.
