Italiano at his best in win at Inglewood

It was a Credentia Construction Man of the Match performance from Jacks custodian Lewis Italiano last week in the 1-0 win against Inglewood United.

The keeper, who will be heading back to A-League side Wellington Phoenix at the end of the Finals, was in sparking form, claiming everything in air and pulling off crucial saves at vital times in the game.

When Italiano joined the club they were languishing in ninth spot, but some astute signings by Dale McCulloch has given the side a new lease on life, and he said the win at Inglewood was one of the best wins he’s been involved in, and he modestly said he was just doing his job.

“We’re flying at the moment, when I arrived we were struggling but the second half of the season the boys have been unstoppable, and to reach the finals is a great achievement,” he explained. “Today was a massive result, and I’m just doing my job, credit to the boys in front of my today, they put in 100%, and without them we wouldn’t be where we are at the moment.”

The whole team, including Italiano, raced to celebrate the late winner from Andy Higgins, and he said it was a real buzz in the rooms after. “A great finish from Higgy right at the end, and I’m sure it will be on his highlight reel,” he said. The celebrations on the pitch and in the rooms were out of this world, I’ve never seen a team celebrated as much as we did after the goal, a great feeling, but the jobs not done yet, we move on to next week, stay focused and move on from there.”

Floreat Athena will be next up for the Jacks and Italiano said finals football is totally different and they need to keep the momentum they have going. “Confidence is sky high with the boys at the moment, but we learnt a good lesson last week against Cockburn, if we slack off teams will punish us,” he said “So today we gave it our all for the whole 94 minutes and got the reward, we have to do that in the finals and more.

“There are some good teams in the top four, and everyone will want to win the Finals, and it’s completely different football. We’ve worked really hard this season, we are really fit and we’re ready to rock and roll and it’s a huge game against Floreat Athena next week to kick things off, and one we’re all looking forward too.”
