Higgins wins it late for Jacks

Higgins wins it late for Jacks

Posted on August 28, 2016 in 'News'

A goal from defender Andy Higgins two minutes into second half stoppage time has given ECU Joondalup a 1-0 win against Inglewood United at the Inglewood Stadium on Saturday afternoon, and sealing a spot in the West Australian Top Four Cup.

The Jacks had to do it for most of the game without leading scorer Gordon Smith, who limped off with a serious knee injury, but some outstanding defending and another good performance from Lewis Italiano saw the side home.

It was an even first half, with Inglewood having the wind behind them, and they had more of the possession, but ECU had the better chances. The best fell to Daryl Nicol who fired just wide after he was picked out by Tommy Amphlett’s through ball.

Italiano produced a great save to deny Mark Pritchard late, and it looked like it would be a scoreless draw, but Higgins had other ideas. His in-swinging corner beat everyone and hit the back of the net to set off wild celebrations.
