ECU Joondalup under 20’s are in cup action this weekend when they take on Perth Glory in the State League Reserves Cup Quarter Final at Grindleford Reserve (the home of Balcatta) (12.15pm)

The ECU under 20’s beat Balcatta in the last round, a game coach Howard Tweats said was outstanding. “As a group we were pleased to beat Balcatta and progress to the next round,” he said. “There were many positives to come out of the game, offensively we enjoyed good periods of possession, during which we created numerous chances, and we took five of them.

“The pleasing factor was the goals were scored by five different players, and we’ve been working on our support play around the ball, and the players got their rewards. On the day all the players played their part. Todd Hoyle made some great saves at critical points throughout the game.

“Admittedly Balcatta had their periods and moments of pressure, and at times we lost our shape and organisation, but all in all it was a solid performance from the group, which apart from the keeper were aged 18 or under.”

Tweats said Saturday’s thrashing at the Glory in the league will have no bearing on this week’s cup game and they will be doing all they can to progress into the Semi-Final. “Sometimes you have to give credit when it’s due, and the Glory were value for their victory last week. Their approach, structure, ball and player management were excellent on the day,” he said.

“Having played them twice now, their system and style of play didn’t change, so we know what to expect. At times in the last game our players were a little naïve with their decision and actions. We’ve identified a couple of areas within the group we need to develop, and we’ve worked hard this week to achieve this for Saturday.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that the tie will be a tight affair, regardless of the previous games, the players are confident and eager for the challenge and with the right attitude and application on the day the young Jacks can make the Semi-Finals.”

In team news, Tweats will have a full squad to choose from, which he didn’t have last Saturday against the Glory in the league. “Last week was a certainly challenging on the squad front. We had to deal with a number of injuries and a posse of players away socially. On the day we were backed up admirably by under 18’s and 16’s squads,” he said.

“The injured players are still rated 50/50, with a couple defiantly out. This aside the squad has a wealth of quality returning, providing us with squad options similar to the Balcatta game. We have worked hard this week to address the game, and I’m hoping that the players stand up and we can but in a good performance and progress to the next round.”
