ECU Joondalup trio Gordon Smith, Lewis Italiano and skipper Ryan Lowry, have all been selected in the WA State side to take on Perth Glory in Wednesday night’s Heritage Cup clash at the Inglewood Stadium.

Kevin Moon was also on the coaches’ radar, but an ankle injury in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Bayswater City has seen the Scottish midfielder pull out of the squad.

ECU Coach Dale McCulloch said it’s just rewards for the players, who have all been outstanding in the clubs impressive PS4 NPLWA season. “The club are delighted to have three representatives in the WA State League side, and wish them all the best,” he said. “Paddy (Lowry) has been superb this season and has led by example on the pitch, and he deserves a spot in the side and we all believe he can play at a higher level.

“Goggsie (Smith) has really showed his quality in front of goal this season and he is a true professional and it will be interesting to see how he goes against A-League opposition.

“While Lewis, after a shaky start to his time with us, has been a rock in recent weeks and produced some vital saves at vital times. He has shown he can play at A-League level and we know he will be back their sooner rather than later.”

Skipper Ryan Lowry’s form in the league has been outstanding and his selection doesn’t surprise many from the ECU Football Stadium. “Obviously very happy to be recognised to play for my home state,” said Lowry, who played for the Perth Glory Youth side for two years. “I think every player wants to test himself against the best and in West Australia Perth Glory are at that level, I’m really looking forward to the game and hope we win.”

Striker Gordon Smith has been on fire in front of goal, bagging 17 goals and the former Heart of Midlothian striker said it’s a huge honour. “I’m delighted to be selected in the State League side, and I’m looking forward to challenging full time A-league players in what should be an exciting game,” he said. “It’s a good chance for the NPL players to impress and show we can play at a higher level.”

Keeper Lewis Italiano join ECU from Wellington Phoenix this season, and he also played for the Glory in 2011-12, 2012-13. The shot-stopper has been outstanding, and has helped the club to eight clean sheets in the last ten games, which they have been unbeaten.
