The new season officially kicks into life on Sunday for Dale McCulloch’s side when they take on Balcatta in Week one of the QBE Night Series at Percy Doyle Reserve (7pm).

The Coach said he’s looking forward to the game and is focused on their performance. “It will be an interesting tournament and all sides are keeping the ins and outs of their squads really quite,” he said. “But we’ve been concentrating on our own plans, and we’ve been working hard and we’ll see how we go on the weekend.”

McCulloch was happy with the run out against Ashfield last week, and said it was good for the players to have a competitive hit out. “We played some good stuff against Ashfield, but it’s only a practice match and we got what we wanted out of it. Our fitness levels were good in the game, and there only going to get better, but I was pleased the way the lads implemented the way we want to play our football, and again it will get better,” he explained.

“It was good for some of the lads to get an hour against Ashfield, as we’ve only been having training games, so it was nice to see them step up that little bit more, and there will be a great competition for places come Sunday.”

He will come up against a former team mate, with former ECU Joondalup midfielder Marc Anthony in charge of Balcatta. McCulloch said he knows how Anthony likes his sides to play, but is only concerned with their game. “I know the way Marc plays quite well now, and it will be a bit of cat and mouse on Sunday, but like I said it’s about how we play and we want to be in tip top shape for the start of the league season,’ he said.

“Yes do you take notice of the opposition but it’s all about how we go about it that David (Tough), Steven (McGarry) and I are more concerned about.”

ECU Joondalup have selected a 24-man squad for Sunday’s game, with new signings Gordon Smith, Steven McGarry, Joseph Jones, Jay Marsden, Shane Pickering, and Jack Oldham all in the squad.

Full Squad is: GK Jamie Serra, GK David Keenan, Ryan Lowry, Joseph Jones, Paul Miller, Josh Tucker, Shane Pickering, Steven McGarry, Tommy Amphlett, Gordon Smith, Jake Benson-Cooper, Bayley Montgomery-Brown, Jason Marsden, Joshua Booysen, Cian Hirrell, Coire McGuigan, Daniel Hepworth, Harrison Bissett, Jack Oldham, Keylon Pollard, Kye Douglas, Olliver Annis, Roland Rixer, Scott Wallis,
