ECU Joondalup opened their 2015 NPL-WA Night Series campaign with a 2-0 loss against Cockburn City at Dorrien Gardens.

Second half goals to Julian Teles, and Conor Kavanagh were enough for Marc Anthony’s side, but ECU was pleased with the way the young side played.

“We blooded a very young side tonight, and it gave the opportunity to some youngsters who have impressed in training,” team manager Craig Stephenson said.  “We had several experienced players missing tonight, but we were proud of the young players’ efforts, and we took plenty out of the game. With it being our first competitive game of the season we are extremely optimistic of the team’s chances this year.”

Dale McCulloch gave first team starting debuts to Jamie Serra, Guy McDonald, Roland Rixer, and Bayley Brown-Montgomery, who started the game up front with his father Stuart. It was a bright opening for the young ECU side and Jake Benson-Cooper’s long-range shot early flashed just wide of the target.

New signing Guy McDonald then played a great through ball to Joe Smith, who was one-on-one with Curtis Aspden, but a last ditch tackle from a Cockburn defender cleared the danger. Just before the break Brown-Montgomery, had a shot from the edge of the box cleared off the line but at the break it was 0-0.

Cockburn opened the second half well, and they took the lead on 48 minutes. A long ball over the top sent Teles in on goal. ECU keeper Jamie Serra came rushing out, but the midfielder coolly slotted home from the edge of the penalty area.

Moments later Cockburn had the opportunity to make it 2-0, when Ryan Malton brought down Liam Murray down in the penalty area. Kavanagh stepped up but Serra guessed the right way to make a great save.

ECU looked to hit back, and Ryan Lowry met Joe Smith’s free kick, but his header flashed the wrong side of the upright.

But the points were wrapped up for the Cockerels on 68 minutes. Devon Gibson made space down the flank and fed Teles, who raced into the penalty area and pulled the ball back to Kavanagh, who fired home first past Serra.

Late on Brown-Montgomery was brought down on the edge of the penalty area, but Smith’s free kick went inches wide of the target.
