ECU Joondalup new signing Rowdy Yates is looking forward to coming home, after signing from fellow National Premier League WA side Subiaco AFC for 2015.

The 24-year-old began his football at the ECU Academy, under the tutelage of former head Coach and now committee member Syd Amphlett. “I’m really looking forward to the new season with ECU, “Yates said. “I played all my youth football at the club, so it feels good to be back here to play first team football for them.”

The move of Yates to the ECU Arena is all about Coach Dale McCulloch, and once the coach spoke to the defender he knew it was right one. “I was asked a few weeks back by Dale if I was interested in coming down to the club. I already knew it’s a top set up down there with a good manager and quality players so I it was an easy decision to make,” Yates explained.

McCulloch believes Yates will be a great pick up for his side. “We’ve had our eye Rowdy for a while, and after talking to him and explaining what we are trying to achieve at the club, we were delighted he has chosen to play for us next season,” McCulloch said. “He will add to our defensive depth, and he can also play wide in the middle of the park, which makes him a versatile player, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Yates enjoyed his time at Subiaco, and wished them all the best next season. “It was hard to leave Subi as they gave me the opportunity to play NPL and I will always be thankful to them for that,” he explained. “Last season with Subiaco was a tough one, full of ups and downs, but I think Subiaco proved a few people wrong with some of the results we picked up last year, and I’m sure they will only get stronger.”

The pre-season is in full swing, as ECU prepares for their opening NPL Night Series game against Cockburn City next Friday and Yates believes they will be really competitive. “We have a good squad with a good mix of quality young and experienced players,” he said. “I really like Dale’s style of football and his winning mentality, he wants to win every game we play and I’m sure that will rub off on to the team so we can push on from last year and hopefully have a successful season.
