Sorrento v ECU – ‘Rivalry Round Preview’

It’s ‘Rivalry Round’ in Week 4 of the PS4 National Premier League WA and it all kicks off tonight at Percy Doyle Reserve with the Northern Derby between Sorrento and ECU Joondalup. (7pm)

It’s been a difficult start to the season for ECU, with games against the top three teams from last season, but Coach Dale McCulloch believes there have been some good signs. “Last week’s performance against Balcatta was very positive, especially the first half and it really hurt us only going into the break only scoring one goal,” he said. “We then showed great commitment to come back from 2-1 down late in the game and could have won it late.”

McCulloch is hoping to regain the services of skipper Jon Higgins and Paul Miller for the game, but knows what to expect on Friday. “It will be a tough game, as all games against Sorrento are,” he said. “We go there with confidence and will be looking to come home with the three points.”

Sorrento came away from Subiaco with all the points last week, but Jamie Harnwell said they should have wrapped it up earlier. “I thought we thoroughly deserved the three points, but we made hard work out of it in the end,” he said. “They were difficult conditions at the Athletic Stadium, so at the end of the day I was happy to walk away with the win.”

The visit of ECU Joondalup for the local derby is always a game the Gulls look forward too, and tonight will be no different. “The games against ECU are always enjoyable, and form doesn’t count for much in all games, as both sides want to have the bragging rights, so it should be a cracking game.”

In team news for Sorrento James Morgan will miss again after injuring himself in the reserves last week, while Daryl Platten, Steve McDonald and Jordan Dodds are all pushing for selection.
