ECU Joondalup’s teenager striker Bayley Montgomery has made huge strides over the past 12 months. A trial in the UK with English Premier League clubs Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion earlier in the year, and making his first team debut for ECU and scoring his first NPL goal for the club.

The 16-year-old has taken it all in his stride, and he will again be in the starting line-up for Saturday’s game against Subiaco AFC at the ECU Football Stadium. He had a glimpse of first team football in the Night Series, but to make his league debut against Stirling Lions last week was a great experience. “It was good to get my first NPL start for the club, after playing their as a youngster in the academy for a number of years,” he said. “It was a disappointing not to get a result, but that wasn’t to be, and every time they went forward they seemed to score.”

In the last home game against Armadale, Montgomery came off the bench, with his dad Stuart, and scored his first NPL goal in the 2-2 draw. “I was looking forward to coming on and I finally got the chance and to score in front of all the home fans, I was really happy,” he said. “It was a great moment for me, and all the boys were happy for me, but they went up the other end of the pitch and scored the equaliser, which took a bit away from the moment.”

The club goes into Saturday’s game with a number of the senior players out injured, but Montgomery said they have the talent in the squad to get a result against Subiaco. “There are a number of players out this week, which will test the squad, but I think we have a good enough squad to take the points,” he said. “We will all be trying to get the three points, and I want to put in a good performance and try and cement a spot in the starting side each week.”
