ECU strengthen links with Aston Villa

Two Aston Villa academy coaches travelled to WA as the club strengthened its links with ECU Joondalup SC.

Since their formation in 1992, ECU have seen a number of professional players pass through their ranks including Villa academy graduates Chris Herd, Shane Lowry and Jordan Lyden, while current teenage striker Bayley Montgomery had trials at the Villa Academy last month. Ben Petty and Tom Evans spent seven days at Joondalup, coaching the adademy sides and delivering coaching education to the local coaches. They also watched a number of junior matches as part of Villa’s talent identification process. As well as strengthening ties with ECU, the trip allowed Villa to forge links with Australian rules side West Coast Eagles.

Petty and Evans visited the AFL outfit and the two clubs will now share ideas in analysis, psychology and training programmes across their respective sports. “We hope that Villa can benefit from this trip,” said Petty, who coaches Villa’s U18 team.  ”We have had the opportunity to spend some time at a club which has produced some top young players and with whom we already have a relationship through signing Chris, Shane and Jordan. “They are committed to producing young players and have a very professional academy system in place. “Moving forward we hope that we can recruit some more top talent from this area and progress them through our academy ranks.”
