ECU Joondalup have ended the PS4 NPL-WA Night Series with a 2-0 win against Inglewood United at the E&D Litis Stadium on Sunday evening.

Danny Dixon opened the scoring early, before Tommy Amphlett added a second just before half time. Inglewood pressed in the second half but some stout defending and some good saves from keeper Jamie Serra kept them at bay.

In good signs for the club Joe Smith made a return from injury, while Jon Higgins and Charlie Comyn-Platt returned to the squad after overseas trips. “A good performance from the lads tonight, and a couple of well taken goals to boot,” said Coach Dale McCulloch, who believes the side is improving every game. “We finished the group in third place and we’ve continued to improve, and the players who have missed most of the competition are coming back in, and spots in the starting line-up are up for grabs, and you can see at training the intensity has lifted to another level which is good going forward.”

It was a good start to the game by McCulloch’s side and Amphlett went close after 10 minutes, the speedy striker raced clear, but fired wide of the target. But four minutes later they hit the front. Danny Dixon made space down the left, cut inside and fired home an unstoppable shot from 20-yards, giving former Perth Glory keeper Aleks Vrteski no chance.

Inglewood was struggling to get into the game and Guy McDonald’s shot on the half hour drifted just wide, before Smith’s cross shot was deflected over the bar. Dixon was a constant threat and he tried his luck again on 36 minutes, but this time it flashed wide of the target. Then on the stroke of half time they doubled their lead. Dixon was the supplier this time, his pass sent Amphlett racing clear and he finished clinically past Vrteski to send ECU into the sheds with a 2-0 lead.

Inglewood opened the second half brightly, and had ECU on the back foot, but they couldn’t convert any of their half chances. McCulloch made a double change on 52 minutes, with Comyn-Platt and Jon Higgins coming on for Roland Rixer and Scott Bushby. Amphlett went through again on the hour, but some last ditch defending denied him. Jamie Serra came to his sides rescue on 70 minutes saving well after the ECU defence was breached, but they steadied and held on comfortably in the end to take the points.
