ECU Joondalup continued their build up for the new PS4 National Premier League WA season with a 5-3 win against Subiaco AFC in a pre-season friendly at the ECU Arena on Thursday evening.

A hat trick from midfielder Scott Bushby and a brace to Tommy Amphlett were the scorers for Dale McCulloch’s side, while Gojam Bany, Jackson Darnell and Ger Fitzgerald were on target for the visitors.

Brandon O’Neill made a guest appearance for ECU, before he joins an Eastern States A-League club, while teenage keeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer made his first start in the senior side. “It was a good work out, but we still have a lot to work on,” said McCulloch after the game. “It was good to see Scott Bushby score a hat-trick, and his performance was pleasing, and I was really pleased with the performance of 15-year-old goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer, who made his debut for the senior side.”

ECU was on top early and they were rewarded with the lead on the quarter hour. Danny Dixon continued his good pre-season form, racing past his marker on the left and whipping in a low cross for Bushby to fire home from close range. They went close to a second, but Andy Higgins, O’Neill and Dixon’s shots all going close, but Subiaco levelled through Gojam Bany. But the home side was ahead again before half time. O’Neill’s free kick caused panic in the Subiaco defence and Bushby fired home from four-yards. Then O’Neill’s long-range shot grazed the outside of the post, while Dixon saw his shot cleared off the line.

Bushby completed his hat-trick just after the hour, Jake Benson-Cooper ball sent the midfielder in on goal and he finished clinically. Amphlett and Andy Higgins saw long-range shots fly high, but Subiaco hit back and scored two goals in 10 minutes, through Jackson Darnell and Ger Fitzgerald to level.

That was the signal for ECU to lift and they were ahead again on 75 minutes; Amphlett lost his marker in the penalty area, and finished low into the corner of the net. The win was secured when the home side added their fifth eight minutes from time. Jon Higgins raced down the right, and whipped in a great cross to Amphlett who volleyed home superbly.
