Perth Glory v ECU Joondalup – Preview

Posted on June 13, 2014 in 'News'

After last week’s excellent 3-1 win away at Cockburn City, ECU Joondalup take to the road again this weekend when they take on Perth Glory at Intiga Stadium (3pm)

Dale McCulloch welcomes back central defender Ryan Townsend from suspension, while David Caine returns from work commitments. The club are still waiting confirmation on the availability of Tommy Amphlett for the game, and the coach is hoping to have the former Glory midfielder available. “It would be nice to have Tommy available, but if he isn’t I believe we have the players to cover the loss,” McCulloch said.

“I was really pleased with the team last week we worked hard and deservedly took the points. Henry Durr made his starting debut and was good for us, while Jon Higgins was outstanding, in a real captain’s performance.”

McCulloch is expecting a tough game against the young Glory side, which includes Joe Knowles and Jack Oldham, players he brought into the ECU first team last season. “Both Joe and Jack were great for us last season, and never let me down in their appearances for our club,” he said.

“Joe has been on a good run of form for the Glory and will need to be watched closely, but they have a young side, that has taken time to get used to the NPL, but have been improving each week and we will need to be on our game to get the points, but I’m confident we can.”

This week the Glory head into game with no new selection headaches and have same squad as the previous week. They sit in 10th spot on the table, but have scored the same amount of goals this season as 2nd placed Perth SC so it is clear to see where their problems lie.

Glory’s season is at crisis point after an alarming run of five consecutive defeats, the last three of which have ended in the same 3-1 score line.  It is no coincidence that Glory’s decline has coincided with the end of the A League season and that some of the early season performers not playing recently in the NPL.
