Joondalup United v ECU Joondalup – Preview

It’s make or break for ECU Joondalup on Friday, when they meet Joondalup United in a local derby in week three of the Football West Night Series at Kingsway Reserve (6.30pm)

Missed chances cost ECU last week, going down 2-1 to Wanneroo City, and Coach Dale McCulloch knows they must start to take them. But all in all the coach is happy the way the squad is gelling ahead of the new NPL season in March. “It’s pre-season and we are trying different things, but we still want to win every game we play,” said McCulloch.

“We are creating enough chances in the game, which is a bonus, but we are going to need to start converting them into goals sooner rather than later.”

A win is a must for ECU, and then they must wait and see the result in the late game when Wanneroo City meets Ashfield. McCulloch is expecting a tough game, as all local derbies are.

“This week will be very tough. I’ve watched Joondalup United twice now and they are very fit and physical. We will have to come to the game with a different mindset than last week and hopefully get the right result. That’s all we can and hope the later result goes for us.” In team news Shaun Timmins returns to the squad for this week’s game.

Joondalup United can still qualify for the quarter final with a win on Friday, and Coach Daniel Smith is looking forward to the big clash. “Basically we know this could be the last time we play ECU in years, so we are making sure we give ourselves the best opportunity of showing how far we have come as a club,” said Smith.

“My players have done the club proud with two really good performances and I want them to enjoy the experience of playing in a local derby knowing that a win could see them reach the knock out stages.”
