ECU Youngsters head to Aston Villa

On Monday three ECU Joondalup academy players will be heading to English Premier League side Aston Villa’s Academy for trials. Ben Hinshelwood, Dylan Leonard, Trent Ostler are all part of John Higgins’ under 13’s academy side and all will head to the UK for two week intense training and take put in games for the Villains while they are there.

Higgins will be heading over with the trio and he wishes them all the best. “Our club has a good reputation at Villa, and Jordan Lydon, who is now part of Villa’s development squad, is doing really well,” said Higgins.

“He left our shores for the UK when he was 11, and the club have been delighted with his progress, and since then Villa and ourselves have agreed to send our top young players over for a two week intense training at their Bodymoor Heath academy/Training Ground.”

Higgins said the facilities at the club are second to none, and the boys will be given the opportunity to impress in three games. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the boys, and they will be training in the Easter holidays, playing three games while they are over,” explained Higgins.

“The boys will head our next Monday and start training on Wednesday with the Aston Villa under 12’s. There first game on Saturday is against Bristol City, then a midweek game against West Bromwich Albion, then Liverpool the following Sunday.”

A number of ECU youngsters have made the move over to the UK and many have been placed in development squads at EPL and Championship clubs. Higgins believes the ECU Academy has a great reputation, which we should be real proud of. “Our club has been fortunate to get the right coaches to develop our players and were benefiting with the first team at present,” he said.

“Of course we have a relationship with Villa, especially with former ECU youngster Chris Herd now in the Villa’s first team. Shane Lowry was there for six years, and now Jordon Lydon, who is involved in the under 21s and still only17.

“So based on this Villa are very interested to have our young players over, and all three of the lads heading over have been at our club since they were 7 and 8 years old and have progressed well. So we felt we would give them opportunity to see from a clubs point where we are with top players in UK. We also have more players at club who will be given same opportunity very shortly.”

Higgins will be giving updates on their progression while there, and wishes them all the best. “This is very exciting time for boys, and we all hope they will have a great experience,” he said.

The trio will also be taking in the English Premier League game between Aston Villa and Hull City at Villa Park on May 3rd.

Good luck lads from everyone at the club!!!!
