ECU welcomes David Annall to the club

ECU Joondalup have appointed recently retired Western Knights defender David Annall to their coaching structure for season 2015.

The 33-year-old, who only hung up the boots at the end of last season after 15 years at Nash Field, was appointed as assistant first team coach at the club, and is looking forward to working with head coach Dale McCulloch. “It’s certainly going to be a lot different from the past 15 years. The new environment, new people and the new job are somewhat intimidating, but I’m definitely excited about the opportunity,” Annall explained. “From what I’ve seen, the club and Dale have what it takes to put pressure on the top clubs of the past few years, so I’m hoping we can build some success together. After meeting some of the committee recently I can instantly tell there are some great people behind the scenes as well.”

After his retirement from the game last season, many thought he would have a few years away from the game, but it’s out of the frying pan into the fire for Annall, but he is looking forward to the new challenge. “Dale and I have been good mates for years and throughout we’ve talked about coaching further down the track together, so in a sense it was unavoidable,” he said. “Perhaps the ideal situation may have been to take a year off, get some badges and observe the leagues but the opportunity was just too good to pass up. A lot of people often said don’t leave the game for too long or you’ll never come back, so maybe I’ve listened to them as well, but it was probably team manager Craig Stephenson getting in my ear every time I saw him that’s got me down there.”

McCulloch is delighted with the appointment, and the pair has already begun work ahead of the new season. “The appointment of Dave is a real positive move, as he brings a lot of knowledge of the local game and a very well respected person as well,” McCulloch said. “We have grown up together and always talked about teaming up at some stage and with Dave announcing his retirement we thought this would be a great time to do so.”
