ECU Joondalup have strengthened their squad for the up-coming NPL season, by signing Joondalup United’s striker Lee Jones.

Jones, who was the Amateur Premier League top scorer last season, has played an integral role in United’s rise to their current status as a State League club. He scored four goals in last season’s cup final, won the golden boot, and played for the State amateur team.

The 28-year-old is off travelling Australia in May, and said it was a tough decision to leave Charonia Park, but is looking forward to the new challenge. “I have made a lot of close friends at United over the past four years and the feeling around the club this season in particular is better than ever,” said Jones.

“After talking to a couple of close friends and family I decided it was the right decision with everything that is going on this year. It also gives me a chance to test myself and experience playing in the NPL, even if it is only for ten games.”

ECU Coach Dale McCulloch believes the signing is good for the club. “We’re delighted to have secured the services of Lee (Jones) for the first part of the season,” said McCulloch.

“He’s off travelling in May, but having seen him in the night series, we know he can play at NPL level and he will give a massive boost to our squad, and will increase competition for places in the forward line.”

United coach Daniel Smith hopes things go well for Jones. “We just all wish him the best, he was not only an inspiration on the pitch, but a true friend off it and although we will deeply miss him, we will all be supporting him at ECU,” he said.

Jones will be in the squad for tomorrow’s pre-season friendly against Stirling Lions at Macedonia Park (Kick off 12 noon)
