Its week 17 of the National Premier League WA and ECU Joondalup make the trip to Grindleford Reserve to take on Balcatta (3pm)

Balcatta sit in second spot on the table, and are coming off a 1-0 defeat against Perth last week. ECU were also beaten 1-0 at home by Bayswater City, and Coach Dale McCulloch was disappointed with the result last week, but was happy with the performance from his players. “I thought we played really well last week, and with a little more luck we could have taken all three points,” he said. “We are creating chances, and as coach is pleasing, we now need to take some of them.”

This week it’s a trip to Balcatta, and the coach is looking forward to the trip to Grindleford Reserve. “Balcatta have been playing some good football and the table doesn’t lie. They beat us 2-0 at our place earlier in the season, but I believe we have improved as a team, and we go their looking for all three points,” McCulloch said.

“We will get Ryan Townsend back this week after missing due to work commitments, which will give me the option of moving Carl Rodgers into the middle of the park, as Joe Smith and Jon Stynes are not available.

“But saying that youngster Henry Durr has been great for us in recent weeks in the middle of the park, another youngster who has come through the ranks of our outstanding academy, so I will have a few selection headaches at team selection.”

Balcatta lost ground at the top of the table last week, with the loss to Perth, but they will hope to get back in the winner’s circle. It was Balcatta’s first defeat in five games last week, a run of form that has included wins against Bayswater and Sorrento.

Coach Ramon Falzon has struggled to fill the void left by the league leading scorer Gustavo Catarcione, with Bobby Kouakou struggling with injury. James Sammut has also been carrying an injury, which has limited his playing time, but he is back this week. The home side will also be missing Keiran Stallard, Kris Gate and Matt Izzo, but Paddy Quinn returns from injury.

In other news the ECU under 20’s beat Floreat Athena under 20’s 4-0 on Thursday night in a re arranged NPL fixture that was abandoned two weeks ago. Goal on the night came from Stuart Montgomery, David Foster, Dejan Spaseski and Joel Gillespie
