The 2014 Cool Ridge Cup takes centre stage this weekend, with 16 games across the metropolitan area.

ECU Joondalup entertains Football West Division Two side Forrestfield United at the ECU Sports Arena, and Coach Dale McCulloch knows that in any cup competition around the world, are great levellers, and his side are one of many National Premier League WA clubs that face tricky ties against lower league opposition on the weekend.

“Saturday will be a tough game for us, as all Cup ties are levellers. I will be telling the boys they (Forrestfield) will have nothing to lose and everything to gain,” said McCulloch. “They have picked up some good players, with the likes of Brad Eiffe from Floreat, Rhys Loxley from Armadale, Trent Wood from Swan and a few more. They will be looking for an upset, so we will need to be on our game from the first whistle”

The Coach will be looking for his side to rebound after a second half faded out against Sorrento last weekend in the NPL-WA. “We’ve had a good start to the season, but on Saturday we made to many errors and Sorrento punished us,” he said.

“Everyone who knows me knows I’m a winner and that defeat hurt, but I will be looking for a response from the squad this week at training and on Saturday against Forrestfield.” In team news Ryan Townsend returns to the squad after missing last week’s game through injury, and will be at full strength.

Forrestfield have slipped dramatically down the leagues in recent seasons, but under the guidance of coach Rod Banjac, the club are heading back in the right direction.

Forrestfield are looking forward to the cup game at Joondalup, but Banjac knows they will have to be at their best to get a result, but he knows they don’t have anything to lose. “They (Joondalup) are playing good football, getting results, and are obviously ahead in regards to match fitness and playing as a unit,” he said.

“If we don’t get caught out by the pace of the game in early stages, I believe that we will do well. We will give it a good go, and will treat this game as another pre-season game, as we prepare for the season opener next week.”
