Amphlett ready for Glory

Former Perth Glory midfielder Tommy Amphlett comes up against his former club on Saturday afternoon, when the Glory visit the ECU Sports Ground to take on Joondalup, in round two of the WA National Premier League.

Both sides drew the opening games of the season, with Amphlett bagging a brace in Joondalup’s 3-3 draw with Cockburn. He spent three seasons in the A-League with the Glory, playing 27 games, but come Saturday he will be doing his best to get the points for Joondalup, but he is expecting a tough game. “It will be a great contest, with both sides looking to get their first wins on the board,” he said.

“I had a great time at the club and I believe it’s made me a better player, but I’ll be looking forward to this game, and getting one over my former employees.

“They have a talented young side that have played together all season in the Foxtel National Youth League, so we will need to be at our best, but I’m sure coach Dale McCulloch will have us primed for a big game, come Saturday.”

The 25-year-old, who became a father last year, had offers from clubs in Asia, but knocked them back to be with his partner Lydie and little Jaxon. “My agent was contacted by a couple of clubs in Asia, but they didn’t fit in to my plans at the time,” he explained. “It’s been a hectic year for me, but after sitting down I thought it would be better to stay in Perth and play for Joondalup, who have been great to me since I left the Glory, and I want to do my bit in bringing success to the club.”

In other NPL-WA games this weekend, Armadale entertain Subiaco at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday afternoon. Also Sorrento visits the Intiga Stadium to take on Inglewood, while Stirling hosts Cockburn at Macedonia Park.

On Sunday Champions Bayswater takes on Balcatta at Frank Drago Reserve at 3pm, while Floreat meet Perth at the E&D Litis Stadium at 7pm.
