ECU Joondalup v Sorrento – Preview

ECU Joondalup takes on Sorrento in a local derby, in round nine of the All Flags Premier Division at the ECU Arena on Saturday.

It was a game of two halves last week at Armadale, and when they went into half time 4-0 down it looked game over but a second half fight back almost saw them take a point. Skipper Dale McCulloch hopes they can learn from last week, and knows they will have to against a strong Sorrento side.

“Last week was very disappointing; losing four goals is never acceptable. We have to learn not to open up to much after losing a goal and self-destruct.  Salv made a few changes at the break and the boys responded really well in the second half to nearly snatch a point,” said McCulloch.

“Saturday’s game is a local derby and we all know Sorrento games are always a battle, very simular to last week so we have to make sure we complete for the whole 90 minutes this week.”

In team news Igor Novakovic, John Higgins, Tanner Selyer, and Ryan Lowry are knocking on the door for selection, but Tommy Amphlett is struggling with a virus.

State League and Cup trophy holders Sorrento have set their sights on repeating last years’ double successes. Coach Paul Price hasn’t made too many changes to his squad, although by his own admission there is still scope to add a few quality players to further develop depth and cover for those who have moved on.

Keeper Curtis Aspden pins a tight defence, with Steve McDonald, Craig Robson, Daryl Platten, Ryan Pearson and Jamie Harnwell, while in the middle of the park Brodie Martin, David Price and Chris Lynch run the show, while up front Todd Harnwell and Gavin Knights will need to be watched closely.

They arrive at The Arena in third spot, but are coming off their first defeat of the season, a 3-2 home defeat against Stirling Lions last week.
