ECU head to Bunbury for Season Opener

The 2013 All Flags Premier League kicks off this week and ECU Joondalup make the long trip to Bunbury to take on Bunbury Forum Force at Paine Park (3pm)

It’s been a good pre-season for Salv Todaro’s side and in their final hit out before the season they had a comprehensive 6-0 win over Canning City at the ECU Arena on Thursday night.

Although only 1-0 up, through a John Higgins goal, at half time, it was mainly due to missed chances. But ECU stepped up the pressure in the second half and added five more goals. Tanner Selyer bagging a brace, John Higgins added another, while Andy Higgins and even Captain Dale McCulloch chipped in with a rare goal.

Keeper Andy Banks has been happy with the pre-season, but knows they will have to be a t their best to take the points. “We’ve had a good pre-season so far and got better with each game we have played, the lads are looking forward to the trip to Bunbury and can’t wait to get the season started,” Banks said.

“The new lads have settled in well and there’s competition for places. We had a good result against Canning last Thursday night and we had four first team players missing, which bodes well for coming season.”

New signings Andy Higgins, Igor Novakovic, Tony Taylor, Jon Stripe, Dejan Spaseski and John Monterosso all come into contention for the starting eleven, as ECU look to start the season with a win, especially after a slow start to their campaign last season when they won only once in the first nine games, including a 1-0 defeat at Bunbury.

Bunbury found the going tough last year but have added Chris Blackburn and Jon Brooks to a squad that already features Steve Howson, Jayden Prosser, Ryan Risdon and player/coach Matt Lock. There are no easy games in this league and ECU will need to be at the top of their game to come home with all three points.
