The league action takes a break this weekend, with the second round of the State Cup taking centre stage. ECU Joondalup make the short journey down the freeway on Saturday to take on local rivals Sorrento at Percy Doyle Reserve in the 2nd round of the State League Cup (2.30pm kick off)

It will give the ECU players the opportunity to make emends for the result in league back in week four. Coach Salv Todaro is looking forward to the game and has been delighted how the new players have settled in to the squad. “Yes we owe Sorrento who beat us 4 weeks ago, and the players are continuing to step up the intensity at training and competition for places is hotting up,” said Todaro.

“After last week’s result all the team was very disappointed in not getting the three points, so we are all looking forward to continuing our cup run.”

In team news Todaro will have to make a change to the starting line-up due to players being cup tied. “Shaun Timmins and Dave Calder are cup tied tomorrow after playing for Sorrento in the last round, which means that we need to do a little re-shuffle of the team,” he said.

Sorrento made it through to the 2nd round with a 3-2 come-from-behind win against First Division side Cockburn City, with new signing Johny Mirco scoring the winner in extra time. Curtis Aspden, Ryan Pearson, Danny Cain and veteran Jamie Harnwell anchor a tight defensive unit, while creative pair Glen Thomas and Brodie Martin provides the link in the middle of the park, while on the flanks they have former ECU pair Jason Mirco and Daryl Platten. Up front Captain Todd Harnwell leads the way, with Mirco and Stuart Montgomery.
